What mem0 is
mem0 is a memory layer for AI applications, available as an open-source library and as a hosted platform. Its documentation describes extracting memories from conversations, storing them for users, agents or sessions, and retrieving them by relevance, with optional graph memory.
What Auld is
Auld is a memory service. Your systems send time-stamped records; Auld extracts memories, reconciles changes into current state with history, and returns cited memories scoped to the viewer, over REST or MCP.
Differences in design
| Dimension | mem0 | Auld |
|---|---|---|
| Primary unit | Memories extracted from messages | Records with time and source, reconciled into memories |
| Changing facts | Updates or replaces existing memories (see its docs for current behaviour) | Supersedes with validity intervals; old versions kept |
| Point-in-time questions | Check current docs | asOf on recall |
| Scoping | User, agent, session and app identifiers | Identities, audiences and per-record visibility |
| Provenance | Check current docs | Source excerpt and time on every memory |
| Deployment | Open source self-host, or hosted platform | Managed, or own cloud under Enterprise |
How to choose
Choose mem0 when
- You want an open-source library you run and modify yourself.
- Your memories are mostly user preferences extracted from chat.
- You are already invested in its ecosystem.
Choose Auld when
- Facts change and you must know which is current and when it changed.
- Answers need citations to source records.
- Visibility differs by team, customer or matter.
Evaluate and verify
Trade-offs depend on your data. Run the same test set against each option — the methodology page has a checklist — and confirm current capabilities in the official documentation.
